How to prepare for your first estate-planning consultation without having everything resolved

Starting point

Arriving with questions is enough.

“I have several properties, a company and a family I want to protect, but I do not know where to begin.” That is a sufficient reason to request an initial conversation. You do not need to arrive with a chosen solution; you need to describe the problem you want to solve.

Twenty minutes of preparation

If your documents are not organized, begin by explaining why: do you not have them, or do you not know which ones you need or how to organize them? Not knowing the correct document is also useful information for the first conversation.

First, prepare a preliminary list of assets and obligations: properties, companies, accounts, policies, debts and assets outside Panama. At this stage, categories, known ownership and country are usually enough. If you do not know a fact, record it as an open question.

Second, describe your family circumstances: whether you are married, divorced or separated; whether you have children, dependants or other people who should participate or be considered. Then locate any existing documents, even if outdated: wills, powers, shareholder agreements, trusts, foundations or beneficiary designations.

Assets, people and documents

Third, write down your initial objective and consider the short, medium and long term. It may be “I want to know what would happen to my company if I were absent,” “I want to check whether my documents reflect my family’s current position,” or “I want to define what I wish to leave each beneficiary.”

The meeting should help separate immediate actions from decisions that require more information. When specific documents must be reviewed, agree on the scope and the method for sharing them. Avoid sending sensitive personal or financial information through a channel that has not been confirmed for that purpose.

The free initial consultation is a brief conversation that provides an overview: whether the person has anything prepared, is starting from zero and which estate matter needs clarification. After the call, the person receives a summary of the principal points discussed.

Use the consultation to decide the next step.

The Estate Clarity Session develops that overview. We review personal and family circumstances, assets, wishes, beneficiaries and the expected timing for each objective in greater detail. The initial result is an asset inventory and an organized list of wishes and decisions from which the estate plan can begin.

At Carolina Solís Law, the starting point is the person and the objective. Digital preparation facilitates an orderly conversation; Carolina examines the legal context to guide the next steps.

Free consultation and Clarity Session: the difference

You can begin without every document. Prepare three things: an asset list, your family circumstances and your short-, medium- and long-term objectives.
